Tony Watson is a director of Greenwoods & Freehills Pty Limited.

Shortly after graduating, Tony joined the predecessor firm of Greenwoods & Freehills, completing his initial training in audit and accounting work before specialising in taxation. He joined Greenwoods & Freehills in 1985 upon the creation of that firm and has been a director since 1989.

Industry Experience

In recent years his main focus has involved providing substantial advice in the property, corporate and trust spheres, on capital gains tax, dividend imputation, prospectuses and overseas investments. He advises large corporations on capital management strategies, having advised on Australia's largest share buy-back and advising on some of Australia's largest merger, spin-off and stapling arrangements.

Tony works with some of the world's largest funds management groups and has advised extensively on the development and implementation of employee share plans for a number of Australia's largest companies.

Tony has expertise in advising inbound investors on the advantages and disadvantages of various property investment vehicles. He also advises on taxation audits and tax implications for expatriates and conducts due diligence investigations and prudential audits.

Professional Background

He graduated from the University of Sydney in 1983 and holds Bachelor of Economics and Bachelor of Laws degrees. He is an Associate of The Institute of Chartered Accountants in Australia.

Tony also devotes time to tax education with The Institute of Chartered Accountants and the Taxation Institute of Australia. In this regard, he has chaired seminars and has written and presented many papers.
