Current Practice

Ken Spence became a Director of Greenwoods & Freehills in June 2008. Immediately prior to this time Ken was a founding Partner of Shaddick & Spence. Ken advises on a wide range of corporate tax matters.

Industry Experience

Ken has extensive experience in advising on corporate reorganisations, acquisitions and divestments. Through his expertise in corporate tax Ken has also been extensively involved in advising a large number of Australian and foreign listed entities on the application of the Australian tax consolidation regime from its commencement in 2002.

Ken is regularly involved in raising policy and technical issues with Government, Treasury and the Australian Taxation Office on behalf of clients and industry and tax professional bodies. He has played a leading role in consultation on the Government’s Review of Business Taxation initiatives, and was also engaged as a specialist consultant to the Board of Taxation on the tax consolidation component of these measures.

Professional Background

Before the formation of Shaddick & Spence in 1993 Ken was a senior partner in Ernst & Young.

Ken is a member of the Board of Governors of the Australian Tax Research Foundation and on the Advisory Panel to the Board of Taxation. He is a past President of the Taxation Institute of Australia and past Chairman of the Taxation Institute’s National Technical Committee. He is also a regular speaker and author on corporate tax developments.

Ken has a honours degree in Economics and Commerce from Melbourne University and has completed post graduate studies in taxation law at Monash University. He is a Fellow and Honorary Life Member of the Taxation Institute of Australia and a Fellow of the Institute of Chartered Accountants.
